• Senior Pet Care

As your pet enters the senior years, wellness examinations are more important than ever. The doctors at Sun City Animal Hospital recommend that healthy senior pets visit the veterinarian every 6 months for a complete wellness exam. During the exam, your Sun City health care team will make recommendations regarding core vaccinations, nutrition, and senior wellness lab work.

    Some Issues Related to Aging:
    • Physical changes—As the body ages, its ability to respond to infection is reduced and the healing process takes longer. It is crucial to consult a veterinarian if you notice a significant change in behavior or the physical condition of your pet. For example: A very common problem for aging pets is inappropriate elimination. Your once well-behaved friend may have trouble controlling his or her bathroom habits. Excessive urination or incontinence may be a symptom of an underlying illness, such as diabetes or kidney disease, both of which can be treatable if diagnosed early.
    • Sensory changes—With the senior years comes a general "slowing down." The major senses (sight, hearing, taste, touch, and smell) become dulled and you may notice your friend has a slower response to his or her surroundings. Your pet may also experience age-related cognitive and behavior changes. The best remedy is to keep your mature pet active.
    • Exercise—Designing and implementing exercise plans for mature pets can be a challenge, especially for those with arthritis or other painful issues. We can assist you in creating the right plan for your animal companion, from simple lifestyle changes to special accessories. Remember, playing and training are excellent ways to keep senses sharp and life interesting — for pets and their owners!
    • Nutrition—Obesity in older pets is often the result of reduced exercise and overfeeding. Being overweight is a risk factor for problems such as heart disease, diabetes, and arthritis. Nutritional requirements change with each life stage. At Sun City Animal Hospital, nutritional consultation is a part of our wellness exams.
    • Pain management—Pets experience pain just as humans do. Senior pets diagnosed with age-related health problems or injuries can be made more comfortable with appropriate treatment. We work closely with you to identify and minimize pain in your senior pet.
    • Hospice and euthanasia services—Saying goodbye to a long-time friend is painful. At Sun City Animal Hospital, we work with you to ensure your senior pet faces the end in comfort and dignity. Our services are guided by your wishes, including caring for the remains in the way you choose.
